Wine Pairing Recommendations for Thanksgiving Dinner

My Suggestions for an Unforgettable Holiday Meal

Starting the Evening: Sparkling Wine

Kick off your Thanksgiving celebration with a sparkling wine that sets a festive tone and awakens the palate. A classic Brut NV Champagne offers crisp acidity, delicate bubbles, and flavors of citrus and brioche, making it a versatile aperitif. For a more budget-friendly but equally delightful option, try  a Cava from Spain, which brings lively citrus and apple notes and a refreshing finish. Both choices will stimulate appetites and pair well with appetizers like cheeses, nuts, or light hors d’oeuvres.

White Wine Choices for the Main Course

  • Chardonnay (preferably unoaked or lightly oaked): The richness and round texture of Chardonnay complement the savory flavors of turkey and stuffing. Unoaked styles bring bright acidity and notes of apple and pear, while lightly oaked versions add hints of vanilla and spice, enhancing the meal’s complexity. There are some great choices from Burgundy like Chablis or Macon-Villages or look for California Chards that specify no or little oak usage.
  • Riesling (dry or off-dry): A dry or slightly off-dry Riesling offers vibrant acidity and subtle sweetness, which balances the savory and sweet elements of Thanksgiving sides, such as sweet potatoes and roasted vegetables. Its notes of citrus, stone fruit, and floral aromas work well with a variety of dishes on the table. German Rieslings from the Mosel or Rheingau regions are great, as well as French ones from Alsace, or look for choices from the Finer Lakes or Washington.

Red Wine Choices for the Main Course

  • Pinot Noir: This elegant, medium-bodied red is a classic Thanksgiving pairing. Its bright red fruit flavors, earthy undertones, and soft tannins harmonize beautifully with turkey, stuffing, and vegetable dishes, without overpowering the meal. I always love a good Burgundy, whether it is a basic Bourgogne AOC or splurge and get a Premier Cru or Grand Cru. But you can also find lovely examples from the Willamette Valley of Oregon and even affordable ones from coastal Chile or Otago Bay in New Zealand.
  • Gamay (such as Beaujolais-Villages or Cru Beaujolais): Gamay wines offer juicy berry flavors, lively acidity, and minimal tannins, making them refreshing and food-friendly. Their fruit-forward character and subtle spice complement both the turkey and the sweet-savory sides. A Beaujolais Village will be easy drinking and fruity, but if you prefer something a little more complex, I love Cru wines from Morgon or Moulin-a-Vent that are almost Pinot Noir-esque in their elegance,

Dessert Wine Choices

As the meal concludes, choose dessert wines that elevate classic Thanksgiving sweets like pumpkin and pecan pie:

  • Moscato d’Asti: This lightly sparkling Italian dessert wine has low alcohol, delicate sweetness, and flavors of peach and apricot. It pairs beautifully with pumpkin pie, enhancing its spices and creamy texture without overwhelming the palate.
  • Tawny Port: Tawny Port offers nutty, caramel, and dried fruit notes that mirror the flavors in pecan pie. Its rich sweetness and complexity also work well with pumpkin pie, making it a versatile and indulgent choice for dessert.
Final Tips

Thanksgiving is a time for celebration, so feel free to experiment and choose wines that you and your guests enjoy. Serve white wines lightly chilled and reds at cool room temperature (around 65) for optimal flavor. Most importantly, savor the food, wine, and company!
