ice in your wine? Martha says it’s ok

January 26, 2022

My best friend ALWAYS asks me to out wine in her Sauvignon Blanc and enjoys the way I cringe when I do it. It makes her happy, but just kills me. I have tried cooling the wine, using various tech gadgets, and she still insists. Can’t change this, so I gave up.

A Washington Post article I read recently stated that 43% of Americans put ice in their wine – mostly Northerners, for whatever reason – a statistic that shocks the Brits and appalls the French. But them we think it’s weird that they DON’T use ice in their sodas, right?

This week I read an interesting article in The Drinks Business about Martha Stewart drinking her wine with ice too. (Coincidentally or not, the above-mentioned friend’s father used to date Martha…so maybe she picked it up from her? LOL)

She likes to dilute her wine and make it lighter and less alcoholic…this tactic helps her moderate her alcohol consumption, so the breaking of a cardinal rule is, for her, more of a healthy habit.

By the way, I do applaud Martha for following in the footsteps of her buddy Snoop Dogg and launching her own Chardonnay through 19 Crimes (due on the shelves February 1. She, like me, is not a fan of oaky, buttery Chardonnays, so this one will be more like some of the Burgundy or unoaked wines that can beautifully express the finesse of this grape. I’m going to try it…maybe another blog or video?

Wine drinking has rules, but they are meant to be broken. If you like your wine with ice, go for it. Enjoy it, because that’s the most important thing.

I’ll try not to cringe. LOL
